Only eleven times in the NHL’s history has a goalie scored a goal. Seven of those times have been during an empty net, with the remaining goals being attributed to the player who last touched the puck before the other team scored on themselves. Due to rules that restrict the goalie from playing in an offensive position, it took about 60 years before the first of the eleven occurred, taking place in 1979 when Billy Smith was the last player to touch the puck before the other team scored on their own empty net. Ron Hextall was the first goalie to purposefully score a goal during a game against the Boston Bruins in 1987.
Ron Hextall and Martin Brodeur lead with two career goals apiece, however both of Ron Hextall’s goals took place on empty nets. Both Damian Rhodes and José Théodore have scored goals in the same game in which they got a shutout, and Evgeni Nabokov is the only goalie to ever score during a power play.
